São Miguel looks small on the map, but its best places are up in the mountains, at the end of narrow country roads and at the bottom of steep valleys. That makes the choice of transport the most important practical decision of your trip. In short: to see the island properly, you need to hire a car or join guided tours. Buses link the towns, but they don’t go where most of the views are. This guide compares every option and helps you choose.
The short answer
- Best option for most visitors: a hire car. It is the only way to reach every viewpoint, lake and trailhead at your own pace.
- No car? Guided tours. Day tours from Ponta Delgada cover the big sights: Sete Cidades, Lagoa do Fogo, Furnas and the tea plantations.
- Buses are limited. They connect Ponta Delgada with the main towns, but not the crater viewpoints, mountain roads or hidden valleys.
- Taxis fill the gaps: airport transfers, hiker drop-offs and fixed-price island tours.

| Option | Reaches | Flexibility | Best for |

| Taxi | Everywhere, at a price | Good, if pre-arranged | Transfers, one-way hikes |

| On foot | Ponta Delgada centre | – | Exploring the town |
The best option
Hiring a car on São Miguel
A car turns São Miguel into an easy island: nothing is more than about 1.5 hours away, and you can change your plans around the weather, which matters here. When Sete Cidades is in the clouds, you simply drive to Furnas instead and come back on a clearer morning.
- Pick it up at the airport. Most rental companies have desks in the arrivals hall at Ponta Delgada.
- Book early for summer. From June to September, cars sell out, and automatics go first.
- The roads change quickly. Fast, toll-free expressways run along the north and south coasts and across the middle of the island, but one wrong turn can take you onto a steep, narrow farm track, a rough cobbled lane or an unpaved road to a viewpoint. Drive slowly and watch for cows and tractors.
- Rent an SUV. Any size will do: the extra ground clearance and grip make those steep, rough roads much less stressful.
- Licence: bring your national driving licence, and check with the rental company whether you also need an International Driving Permit.
💬 Paweł’s tip The roads here can be excellent one minute and change dramatically the next, just by taking a wrong turn. I highly recommend renting an SUV for peace of mind.
No car? No problem
Guided tours
If you don’t drive, tours are the practical way to see São Miguel. Most leave from Ponta Delgada, many with hotel pick-up.
- West of the island (half or full day): the Sete Cidades viewpoints, often with Ponta da Ferraria or a pineapple plantation.
- East of the island (full day): Furnas, the cozido lunch, Terra Nostra Park and the tea plantations.
- The centre: Lagoa do Fogo, Caldeira Velha and the north coast.
- Jeep tours: small groups on dirt tracks and back roads to viewpoints buses and big coaches can’t reach.
- Private driver-guides: your own route at your own pace, good value for families and small groups.
- Activities: whale watching, canyoning and guided hikes usually include transport or meet at a fixed point.
The downside: tours follow a fixed plan, so you can’t wait for the clouds to clear or linger where you like. Book a day or two ahead in summer.
Fill the gaps
Taxis
- Airport transfers: about 10 minutes to the centre of Ponta Delgada.
- Island tours: taxis offer half-day and full-day tours at agreed prices, a flexible alternative to group tours.
- Hiking: the easiest way to do a one-way trail, such as the Sete Cidades crater rim: get dropped at the start and picked up at the end.
- Agree the price first for longer trips, and the pick-up time and place for hikes.
On a budget
Buses on São Miguel
Regional buses connect Ponta Delgada with most towns and villages on the island, including Ribeira Grande, Lagoa, Vila Franca do Campo, Furnas, Povoação, Nordeste, Mosteiros and the village of Sete Cidades. Tickets are cheap and bought on board.
- Frequency: buses to Ribeira Grande and along the south coast are the most frequent; remote villages may have only a few a day.
- Weekends: there are fewer buses on Saturdays and very few on Sundays and holidays.
- Last buses back to Ponta Delgada often leave in the late afternoon, so check the return time before you set out.
- Journey times are long: around 1.5 hours to Furnas, compared with 45 minutes by car.
- In town: small minibuses run around the centre of Ponta Delgada.
Know before you rely on buses
Places you can’t reach by bus
Buses run between towns on the main roads. Many of the places that make São Miguel special are up in the mountains or down side roads with no service at all, including:
- The Sete Cidades viewpoints: the bus goes down into the village in the crater, but not up to Vista do Rei, Grota do Inferno or the other rim viewpoints, where the famous view is.
- Lagoa do Fogo: there is no bus on the mountain road to the Lagoa do Fogo Viewpoint, nor to Caldeira Velha or Lagoa do Congro.
- The Lombadas valley: the deep green valley of the old mineral-water springs, with its waterfall, is at the end of a long side road with no service.
- Nordeste’s viewpoints: Ponta do Sossego, Ponta da Madrugada and the road down to the Arnel Lighthouse.
- Pico do Ferro above Furnas, the Pico da Vara area and most trailheads in the hills.
- Ponta da Ferraria: the hot spring in the ocean is at the bottom of a steep road below the cliffs.
That’s why, without a car, guided tours or taxis are the realistic way to see these places.

Questions
Getting around São Miguel: FAQ
Do you need a car on São Miguel?
For most visitors, yes. Buses connect the towns, but many of the best viewpoints, lakes and trailheads have no public transport. Without a car, use guided tours and taxis.
Can you get around São Miguel by bus?
Only between towns. Buses reach places like Ribeira Grande, Furnas and the village of Sete Cidades, but not the crater viewpoints, Lagoa do Fogo, the Lombadas valley or Nordeste’s viewpoints, and services are infrequent at weekends.
Is it easy to drive on São Miguel?
The main roads and coastal expressways are good and toll-free, but side roads can turn steep, narrow and rough without warning. An SUV and a relaxed pace make driving much easier.

An SUV, of any size, is the most comfortable choice: it copes much better with steep, rough side roads.
Should I book a hire car in advance?
Yes, especially from June to September and if you need an automatic or an SUV. Cars on the island often sell out in summer.
Are guided tours a good alternative to a car?
Yes, if you don’t drive. Day tours cover Sete Cidades, Lagoa do Fogo, Furnas and the tea plantations, though on a fixed schedule.
How do you get from the airport to Ponta Delgada?
By taxi, about 10 minutes, or by bus. Most hire-car desks are in the arrivals hall.
