About Azores Atlas

Azores Atlas is an independent travel guide to the nine islands of the Azores, built around one simple idea: the easiest way to plan an island is on a good map.

What we make

Every island has its own free interactive map with viewpoints, crater lakes, hot springs, natural pools, beaches, waterfalls, peaks and sights, each with GPS coordinates and one-tap directions. The maps are made for phones, so you can use them on the road without installing an app. Alongside the maps we write island guides and practical planning pages, such as which Azores island to visit.

How the maps are made

  • Map data comes from OpenStreetMap, the open map built by volunteers, and is hosted on our own server.
  • Places are selected and cleaned by hand: duplicates merged, junk removed, names checked against what you will see on the ground and on Google Maps.
  • Must-see places are our own picks of the highlights on each island.
  • Photos are our own or free public-domain images. Where a photo needs a credit, it is shown on the place page.

Independent and free

No tourism board or business pays to appear on our maps, and the order of places is never for sale. If we ever add affiliate links, for example to car hire or tours, we will label them clearly.

Spotted a mistake?

Islands change: roads close, viewpoints get new names, new natural pools open. If something on a map is wrong or missing, please tell us and we will fix it.
