São Miguel Beaches: The Best Beaches and Pools, Coast by Coast

São Miguel has more beaches than any other island in the Azores: long black-sand beaches for surfing on the north coast, calmer bays on the sunny south coast, hidden coves at the end of footpaths, lava pools in the villages and even a hot spring in the sea. This guide covers the best of them coast by coast, with what each one is good for, so you can pick the right beach for the day’s weather.

Calm and sunny

South coast beaches

The south coast is sheltered from the prevailing winds, so it is usually sunnier and calmer: the best side for a relaxed swim.

  • Pópulo Beach: a sheltered black-sand beach a few minutes east of Ponta Delgada, with a beach bar and lifeguards in summer. The easiest beach if you are staying in town.
  • Milícias Beach: a long black-sand beach on the edge of town, popular for walks and sunsets.
  • Água d’Alto Beach: one of the island’s best beaches, a wide sweep of dark sand near Vila Franca do Campo.
  • Vinha d’Areia Beach: the town beach of Vila Franca do Campo, with cafés close by. In summer, boats from the harbour take you to the Vila Franca islet, whose crater forms a perfect round lagoon for swimming.
  • Fogo Beach, Ribeira Quente: below Furnas, where hot springs rise into the sea and warm parts of the water. Combine it with a day in Furnas.

Waves and surf

North coast beaches

The north coast around Ribeira Grande faces the open Atlantic: bigger waves, the best surf and more wind and cloud. On calm summer days, it is wonderful for swimming too, but respect the flags.

  • Areal de Santa Bárbara: a long black-sand beach near Ribeira Grande and the heart of the surf scene, with surf schools and a beach restaurant.
  • Monte Verde Beach: the beach of Ribeira Grande town, another popular surf spot.
  • Santana Beach: a wild beach near Rabo de Peixe, used by surfers.
  • Moinhos Beach: a small, pretty cove of sand at Porto Formoso, sheltered by cliffs, close to the tea plantations.
  • Viola Beach: a hidden cove at the bottom of a valley near Lomba da Maia, reached by a footpath past the ruins of old watermills. No facilities.

Sunsets

West coast: Mosteiros and Ferraria

  • Mosteiros Beach: black sand facing a row of dramatic sea stacks, with rock pools at the end of the village. The best sunset beach on the island, and a short drive from Sete Cidades.
  • Ponta da Ferraria: not a beach, but a natural rock pool where a hot spring flows into the ocean. Go at low tide and in calm seas. More in our hot springs guide.

Tips for São Miguel beaches

  • Pick the coast by the weather: if the north is windy and cloudy, head south, and vice versa.
  • Follow the flags and swim at lifeguarded beaches when the sea is rough; the north coast has strong currents.
  • Black sand gets hot in summer sun: bring sandals.
  • Water shoes help at rocky beaches and lava pools.
  • Look out for Portuguese man o’ war on the sand in summer, and don’t touch them.
  • Sea temperature is about 20–23 °C from July to October. See the Azores weather guide.
